Next season skis

Postby alpinebaseline » Tue Aug 24, 2021 12:04 am

Hi all,

I am looking to upgrade from my vintage Head Supershape 170 (circa 2009) and would appreciate feedback on the following models.

I am 33 y man, 6ft 180lb. Advanced skier TTS, beginner relearning with PMTS.

Head Supershape E-Original + PRD 12 GW 21/22 163cm
Head Supershape E-Speed + PRD 12 GW 21/22 163/170cm
Volkl Racetiger SC + Vmotion 11 GW 19/20 170cm
Fischer RC4 Worldcup SC + Z12 PR 21/22 165cm
Kneissl Red Star SC 20/21 165cm
Stöckli Laser SL 20/21 165/170cm
Stöckli Laser CX 21/22 163/170cm
Stöckli Laser WRT ST 21/22 172cm

If the E-Original was available in 170cm I would go for that but unfortunately it is sold out in that length.

The number one goal is to get something that will allow me to develop PMTS skills on-piste.

Many thanks!

Jonny

The E Original is solid. I don't know anyone that has liked the e-speeds that much. I have not skied them but no one likes them nearly as well as the previous version. Everyone consistently likes the Fischer SCs. I have not been on one in years but they are solid skis. I know nothing of the Kneissel. Of the stocklis, your best bet is the CX which is a nice ski and the most user friendly of their slalom carvers.

Thank you that's really useful. Tempted by the Fishers now...

So they shop I was looking at buying from in Europe have the 170 e original available now so plan is to go:

Head Supershape E-Original + PRD 12 GW 21/22 170cm

Head Kore 87 20/21 180cm
+ Atomic Shift MNC 13 Black / White 90mm

Kore would be for short touring / general all mountain use after it’s snowed.

Any comments or suggestions before I pull the trigger would be appreciated! :)

I am not sure the Head Kore is a good PMTS ski. I recall a not very favorable review by jbotti on this forum.

Yeah I've seem the mixed reviews - did notice another comment from jbotti when asked about skis for touring:

"The Kore's have their share of Rocker but less than many skis these days. You could do worse for a touring ski as they are light."

I also read that they 'ski short' so am now wondering if I would be better off going for:

Kore 93 189cm rather than Kore 87 180cm (the 87 is only available from my preferred shop in 180cm)

jbotti - do you have any thoughts on this please? Many thanks.

The Kore 93, due to weight and in-bounds skiing functionality makes a pretty sensible 'in-bounds' resort touring ski-for uphill travel in resort. There's just no way it'll pass muster as a PMTS learning or even pmts free skiing ski.

FWIW-and I'd love to hear what others think on this topic-but unless you are going uphill, I think the industry passion for super-light skis like the Kore is misplaced. In general, skis with a little heft have function advantages that can't be replaced by lightness. Have metal will travel. ; )

head took a wrong turn when it ditched the monsters for the Kore's. Heck, even the metal free Flight skis were better than the kores.

I guess my only comment on the Kore's is that they are not great PMTS skis but they are better than many fully rockered skis. They are easier to ski off piste by allowing non pmts movements, at times even rewarding them. Everyone can make up their own mind as to whether they want or need to ski a ski like this. If you want to learn to ski at the PMTS black level off-piste, these are definitely the wrong skis and skiing them will retard your progress toward that goal.

Thank you that’s useful.

I would plan on skiing the e-original 90% of the time and kore only on special occasions.

I’m very open to any suggestions for an alternative - something a bit wider that is not so heavy that it makes skinning up difficult. I’ve done quite a bit of searching on the forum and haven’t been able to find any recommendations unfortunately, besides the Head RnR and Monster, both of which are not easy to find in the UK.

Anything else I could look at?

Many thanks, Jonny

I did ski the Movement Icon 95 a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

I can't see any mention of it on the forum so I somewhat disregarded buying.

14m turn radius (136-95-123), standard camber, with some tip rocker.

Would welcome anyone's thoughts from a PMTS perspective?

Sorry to keep responding to my own posts, last one I promise!

I have managed to find a new Monster 88 Ti 177cm for sale, so how does this sound?:

E-Original 170cm
Monster 88 Ti 177cm*
+
Some dedictated lightweight touring skis sometime in the future

* Would putting shift/frame bindings to allow short touring on these be a no-no?

Thanks again!

The Monster 88 is a much better PMTS ski than the kores. Its not a light ski but that doesn't mean you can't tour with it.

Perfect. Now just need to choose between the Monster 88 Ti and the Monster 83 X - does anyone have any experience or comments on which would be better for all mountain / short ski touring use? Both in 177cm.

I have not skied the X in either the 88 or the 83, but it has way less metal (possibly none). I would go for the 88 ti between the two.

as someone who has skied the supershapes in learning pmts and is now starting to be ready for a different all mountain ski, what are some recommended contenders for the next purchase? perusing ebay and it looks like the monster 88s are in short supply and i am afraid the kastle mx88 might be a bit too much ski for me still?
