Does anyone know if the hotels near the Portland airport are in a safe part of town? How about Gresham??

I assume you planning to be here for summer camp :)
airport is no good for you Gresham would be ok from Gresham it's only 1 hour drive to timberline .
or you can get a inexpensive hotel room in Government camp only 10 min. drive to the Timberline.
But no entertainment in Government Camp except one bar...

Yes, I plan to go to the camp. Mapquest indicates airport area is only about 15 min or more drive than from Gresham. Is that inaccurate?

At any rate, I'd need to stay near airport at least the first night since I arrive in at midnight on the 8th.

David,
you can stay in airport area there are several nice hotels ...
when I said "it's no good for you" I mean that area is kinda industrial
and it will take you to drive about 1.5 hour to mt Hood each way.
but you will be only 15-20 min. away from downtown where main attractions happens .
Portland downtown is very clean, save and by architecture remind Europe
it's nothing like any downtown in major cities.
I recommend to stay in downtown Portland. even at mid night you can get a cab and get to dt easily also if you will stay I dt. I actually can pick you up and drop you back every day of the camp since I drive by dt any way and spend 15 hours of my day there ( my office in dt)

all the best

Thanks for the offer but I will need a car as I hope to do some sightseeing and the last day, must leave the camp by noon to get to my flight out. However, I do appreciate the offer. I look forward to seeing you at the camp.

Tks
