Chip Monster?

Postby epic » Sun Feb 22, 2009 4:51 pm

Anybody tried the Chip Monster? This place seems to be Head central, so I figure if anybody has, this might be the place.

I have the Head RD SL and the iSpeed. Looking for something a little mellower but that still likes to charge. A true do it all ski that can go from ripping groomers to ripping bumps 15m radius or so. This ski seems like it might fit the bill. The only other Head I can remember having skied is the SS Magnum. That ski seemed a bit softer than I like and the binding delta wasn't quite right for me. Good news is that Head has shims for the RFD 14 binding that comes on the Monster. (For some reason I felt the need to shim the toes on my iSpeeds, but not my SLs)

Harald recently said that the Chip was a beefier feeling version of the IM78. I'm actually considering the Chips or the IM78 as well, so I'll look forward to hearing what others have to say.

BTW - welcome.

I did not like the chips. Too dang stiff for me (but I'm not very strong and I'm a light weight). I seem to recall that both HH and Diana thought the chip was a bit stiff as well. HH skis the IM78 in a 177. I skied the IM78 in a 171 and 177 and liked them both; recently purchased the 171 IM78 because I wanted it a bit shorter for bumps and trees.

Note that we are all on the lighter side (less than 155lbs). The chip might be good for those that are closer to 200lbs, but I'd suggest a demo to be sure.

Does anyone happen to know what the difference is between the regular Supershape and the Chip version of that? (Apart from the presence of a chip, that is). I'm wondering whether this Chip version, too, is reckoned to be substantially stiffer than the regular, although having rented some last year and got on extremely well with them, it would surprise me.

The Chip has the Magnum shape. I would assume it's liek a stiffer/damper Magnum, but I've never skied it. It also has the Railflex binding.
