My report

My report on PSIA's negative influence on the ski industry was redacted. The collision with the ski areas by PSIA is obvious.

Winter will not go away, still snowing here, leave for Austria tomorrow. Hoping to ski with Reilly if he's healed. He has been having serious hip pain for a few months.

I have never skied Hintertux but all summer glacial skiing is similar. Conditions can be anywhere from 6” of fresh snow to ice turning to slush by 11:00. I personally have never developed a love for summer glacier skiing, but you can get in a few good hours each day generally in the mornings. HSS used to do race camps at Mt Hood. I remember running slalom gates in a foot of fresh snow. Fun day! Most are not nearly that fun.

Thanks for sharing your experience! 6 months no skiing is too long, it feels like starting from scratch in November.

IMO, going to the Southern Hemisphere is a much better move than summer glacier skiing. Chile is not too expensive and they have some great mountains. Argentina as well but harder to get to.

I like skiing at Timberline when I feel the need for an off season tune up.

Has anyone been to Portillo? Do they have runs suited for drilling?

Not Portillo but I have been to Valle Nevado (BTW easier to get to than Portillo). Valle Nevado is paradise for drill work. Super blue groomers and the snow quality is solid. I think the base is above 10k feet. Snow comes in huge storm down there. The whole resort is above the tree line and the storms are huge (3-5 feet at a time) with massive winds. Resorts often close in the midst of the storms. Very few people ski the pow when it opens and as the bulk of the skiing is on groomers all over Chile. Crazy!!

Yes, they have a few good groomers. Portillo skis very small when conditions aren't good, and very large when you can ski off-piste. Conditions can be iffy in the early season. Early August is probably the best time to go. Also, be aware that the road can close in big storms, so if you arrive when it is dumping, you may not be able to get to the area. The Hotel offers great food and service, but if that doesn't suit your budget, the Inca Lodge can be a good option for a hostel-like experience.

Thanks geoffda! We are planning a trip in August, can you recommend a ski for some of the off-piste areas? I only have slalom skis.
