2018/2019 Head Boots

Here is some info on Head Boots I got from Diana when I was out at the shop. Head has a new race plug that will debut next year which will be called the R2 (which is a 150 flex, 94mm last race plug). They will also make this in a 130 flex which is called the R3. Evidently its a whole new last and fit and it is longer than the B2/B3 last. This is essentially bad news for me because the B2 fits me perfectly (so I am pumped I just got a new pair). Diana had not skied it but Walker had seen it and perhaps skied it (can't remember). In classic Head fashion they are doing stuff that makes little sense. They will continue the B series but eliminate the B2 from it. They will continue to make the B3, the B5 and they are adding a B4 which will be a 120 flex 94mm (they may call it 95mm) lasted boot. I guess that will be nice for a few people that the B5 was too soft for and the B3 was too stiff (but they are so easy to soften). Personally I think the flex differences are likely minimal and most decent PMTS skiers are looking for stiffer boots (perhaps not the rest of the buying public) but I digress.

Hopefully the R2 will be a great boot. I hope they did not dial back the forward lean but I guess anything is possible.

Having read on here Head were bringing out a new race boot i bought the last pair of B2's I could find in my size getting them from abroad, sounds like this might not have been a silly move :-)

Was curious regarding the comment that the boots are so easy to soften. Is this specific to just the B2 ?
What is the procedure to soften?
Thanks

On the Raptor RS130 there is a " cut to " line around the top of the clog. This lowers the height all around the clog. I believe it is common practice to lower just the "V" either side of the clog to soften a boot.
You could of course do this to the B series boots also but i cant see a line inscribed on mine.

Its not just specific to Head boots or the Raptor line. All boots can be softened in the same fashion. This is why you always want to buy a stiffer boot vs. a softer one. You can never stiffen a boot but you can always soften them.

BTW, in most instances the issue with boots that are too stiff is fit. Boots that are too large make it very difficult to get in the right position to actually flex the boot. My daughter who is 5 6" and 108 lbs insisted that size 23 Lange RS 120s were to small and she went to a size 24. The boots felt overly stiff and she complained about them non stop. Went to the 23 shell this year (did some work to fix the fit issues) and they ski great and she flexes them plenty (or all she needs).

Nice to see that they left the forward lean and the ramp angle of the new R line the same as the B line (at 16* and 4*). We will have to wait and see what they BSL is on the new ones. Hopefully that are not a lot longer.
