MA request for noobSkier

Postby noobSkier » Wed Feb 01, 2017 3:38 pm

This is my fifth season skiing at around 15-20 skiing days per season. This year I have the opportunity to ski about 4-5 times a week so I decided to really dedicate this season to improving my skiing. Ive been working alot on the TFR and focusing on tipping the inside ski. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

For the Two Footed Releases compare your movements to the demonstrations in these vids.

Look especially at Harald's counteracting, and compare it with the rotation that you employ in your tfr. It happens in your other skiing, but it is most noticeable in the tfr. Keep working on it, it will greatly improve the rest of your skiing when you get it right. Maybe someone more qualified can tell you if the rotation is a symptom of something else.

One of my favorite Harald quotes - "if your inside hand is not moving forward, you are rotating"

Specifically... compare your pole plant (and the resulting upper body movements) to the first instruction from Diana in the second video linked by Max_501, above.

In addition to the videos linked by Max_501...

1. The dryland/slantboard exercises (on HSS or YouTube), to learn upper body essential movements (CA & CB)

2. The two Angry Mother videos (on HSS), to transfer these movements to on snow

Thanks for the tips guys. Seeing my own skiing has been eye opening...I've studied all of those videos but I didn't realize I was bastardizing the exercise until now. A tough pill to swallow...but very sobering. Time to get back on the horse!

So that this never gets lost I'll copy it here.

MA Checklist:

1. Does the release start by flexing the outside leg?
2. Does LTE tipping lead engagement to the new turn?
3. Are the feet pulled back at transition?
4. Is the inside foot held back throughout the turn?
5. Is there enough CB and CA and is the timing right?
6. Strong inside arm?
7. Is the pelvis included in the CB/CA movement?
8. Is the inside leg flexed as the turn progresses?
9. Does the outside leg extend naturally (no pushing) as the turn progresses?
10. Does LTE tipping continue throughout the turn?
11. Is there a pole touch and how is the movement and timing?
12. Alignment - watch the skis and knees carefully - does anything look like it needs go be tipped in or out?

Your inside foot management is good but your feet are too locked together. HH suggests the Power Release and Javelin drills to help with that.

Can you get some video performing the one ski alignment tests described on Pages 190-191 of ACBAES Book 1?

Yes Max_501, i'll film the alignment tests early next week, thank you.

Here is another video from the same day of me attempting some longer radius edge-locked turns:

Compare your 4 turns that start at 9 secs to this slow mo HH turn:

What's different?

I have no MA comments but want to compliment on your skiing! You're a fifth year skier and already skiing a lot nicer than a lot of instructors who skied since they were kids. This is the power of PMTS!

HH's carving is truly a thing of beauty... ill take a stab at it. Seems to me that compared to HH, my CA/CB looks non-existent.

Take a step back and slow the skiing down so momentum can't mask missing essentials. Work on tipping, balance, CB, and CA.

Detailed instruction for the Two Foot Release Drill.

Here is one the the alignment tests from ACBAES Book 1. Sorry about the quality, it was self-filmed with my GoPro+remote. Hopefully this one gives us what we need, but please let me know if I should try to get a better one.

For the last few days I've been mostly working on CA/CB drills and I was very surprised with the result! For one, it came with the realization that previously I wasn't counter-acting at all, and the second is that my edge hold improved by several orders of magnitude...I couldn't believe the difference. Here is a recent video with my results. (Sorry about the quality; goPro+some film editing magic). Its hard to tell, but the snow was really soft; theres no way I could have carved this before. Still lots of work ahead, but thank you Max_501 for pointing me in the right direction!
