History of PMTS: Old Magazine Articles

Postby SkierSynergy » Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:24 pm

Hi everyone.

I had been digging around in a bunch of old magazine articles that Harald had written and I asked Harald if I could post them on my website. I have about 10-15 and I'll post them over the next two weeks or so.

The first two are:

A question of alignment (Snow Country November, 1994)

Streamline your turns: conventional unweighting causes inefficient turns. Heresy? (Snow Country December, 1994)

I will be placing them in a seperate blog category simply named Old Magazine Articles that can be found at:

http://www.skiersynergy.com/cms/blog-ski-instruction-pmts-harb-carvers/blog-categories.html

As new articles appear, they are also added to the "Recently Aded Aticles"section of the main page.

Enjoy

Don't be shocked if you see the dreaded "steer" word in the article. But Tipping is there and it usurps the steering word. My editor didn't want the rest of the contributors to freak out that I was using a totally different technique than they were teaching, so he had me leave "steering" in there. I was definitely considered "Satan" of skiing, by PSIA after a few of my articles were published. Hey, "Satan of Skiing", now that has a nice ring to it. Kind of like the "Sultan of Swing".

Jay,
It was fun to see the articles from 1994. I still have articles in my file from Skiing magazine from 1995 and 1996 which introduced me to Harald's revolutionary teaching. I remember thinking that there was finally clear instruction in a ski mag which made an immediate difference in your skiing. I was disappointed when Harald's articles stopped in 1997 and they reverted to their old style "instruction". Of course, since then I've enjoyed the web site, books, DVD's and this forum.

Thanks Jay for putting up the articles. Get any snow yet, we are getting a little now.
I tried to put up a comment on the bottom of your page, but I guess it has limited character space. So I tried to post it in two sections didn't really work, so here is the whole post.

Don't be shocked if you see the dreaded "steer" word in the article. But, "Tipping" is there and it usurps the steering word. My editor didn't want the rest of the contributors to freak out, that I was using a totally different technique than they were; so he kept "steering" in the article, so people who related to the old way could understand. After a series of my articles, in 1994 to 1996, I was definitely considered the "Satan of Skiing" by PSIA. Hey, that has a nice ring to it, kind of like the "Sultan of Swing", but different.

I have another interesting remembrance. I remember another article from about 1998 in Ski or Skiing. It was an article about members of the PSIA Demo team and tryouts. At the end of the article the author noted that Harald was not "renewed" and there was another guy - and i'm sorry I can still see his face, but his name eludes me now-- who was not either. About two months later I had the opportunity to have an all day lesson with him (the second guy - I believe his name was Bart now that I think of it more - he did construction in Hawaii in the summers) (edit 8-18-10 I remember---- Bart Zawacki) at Teton Village as part of a ski patrol group. Is was interesting to me that he began to show us techniques such as picking up the inside foot and rolling the inside ankle. Sounds somewhat familiar. In any event, I remember the author of the article commenting at the end of the article on two who were not chosen and one he descirbed as the guy he would most like to have a technical discussion about skiing with ( Harald) and the other the guy (Bart) he'd most like to ski a run with and have a beer. Very apt descriptions. And look at the progression since. Just another small thanks to you, Harald. As I work with other ski patrollers on their toboggan handling techniques and at exams I continue to refer them to this website and suggest Harald''s books and DVD for the building of skills.
