Listing of Good Sites for using Harb Carvers

Postby SkierSynergy » Tue Jul 06, 2004 9:58 pm

I'm suggesting that this topic be used for posting good sites for Harb Carving.

Please post any of the following:

1. The city and state.
2. The address of the site
3. The level(s) of carving involved.
4. Appropriate limitations (such as access, ownership of the site,
dangerous dogs, etc.)
5. Appropriate suggestions or useful info about the site.
6. Any web site with info about the site or pics of carving at the site.
7. Contact information of someone knowledgable about the site.

Hey Sinner,

You don't get it. There's like 5 people in the world who follow PMTS.
1) Wacko (that'd be me)
2) The Rooski
3) 97.2

???
eh, maybe there's only 3 of us?

Maybe you should check back with us in about 10 years? Maybe by then we'll be able to answer your questions?

Be cool Sinner, talk to you later.

SCSA:
judging from the fact that there is a constant waiting list to get a pair of carvers and that the website has announced a shipment of 400-500 pairs couple of times already, I assume Harald has sold some thousand+ pairs so there may be more than the 3 of you.

Here is an idea, if you see someone whom you do not know on Carvers, post here!

Sorry about that, piggy.

I was being sarcastic. You know, if you read "the other site", anti-HH and his sidekick always want to point out that there's not very many of us and that there's very few instructors.

I know the carvers are a great tool -- HH wouldn't put them out there if they weren't. I probably won't have be on them this summer as I now have my eyes set on a triathlon; all my training time is taken up, can't do it all.

When I get my new rig, I was going to take a trip East to Dumont. When I do, I'm sure HH won't let me out of there without trying the carvers. :)

You GOT TO try em! They are real fun and they make counting months/days before next season way easier.

piggy,

So you really like them? You think they'll improve your turns? Do you lighten, flex and tip, like we do on the snow?

Mt Tabor Portland Oregon

Postby SkierSynergy » Wed Jul 14, 2004 2:05 pm

The best parking is accessed by turning east on Salmon from SE 60th. Follow Salmon until a sharp left at the gate for the reservoir. The gated road in front of the reservoir starts out flat and slowly rises for about ? of a mile. Just skate up the road and pick a comfortable spot from which to start.

Another good spot for starting out is the old soapbox derby track. It is very wide and ends in a flat to an uphill. However, it can often need a sweep and is also near the off-leash gathering site for dog owners. If you are going here, consider coming in on SE Harrison Court and parking at the south side gate below a smaller reservoir. Walk up the stairs and past the reservoir to the derby track.

For those more advanced carvers, catch a ride (or a drag) up Salmon to the top parking lot and carve the arrowed road. Great for Comps OK for Pros too steep for slaloms. This is only open to non-motorized traffic. However, watch for fast moving bikes and skateboards. It?s a great ride of about ? mile with varied steepness. A really fun leg burner!

Most of the motorized roads look great, but have lots of traffic. It?s up to you. Be safe.

Portland Oregon: Cherry Park Elementary School (in SE)

Postby SkierSynergy » Wed Jul 14, 2004 2:13 pm

This is the perfect place for learning through lower intermediate carving. The school is between SE Division and SE Stark. Take SE 96th to SE Market. Turn east for about 4 blocks and then take SE 104th south. The school is up about 4 blocks on the east side of the street.

This is a wide, very gentle parking lot of fresh blacktop and is in a very quiet neighborhood. There are also good gentle streets to carve within a 4 block radius. Each hill is about 2 - 4 blocks long. Most have relatively slow and light neighborhood traffic. Have fun.

Posting sites for Carving

Postby SkierSynergy » Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:08 am

I will suggest the following convention for posting locations.

1) In the subject line, post the city and state (country if necessary) and
then the name of the site -- I did this on my previous posts.

2) Also repeat the same information in the same way in the body of the
post -- sorry I didn't do this, but I will.

This way, eventually, one could search this topic using a city or state and get a list of sites.

Also if anyone has any pics of sites or pics/videos of carvers in use, e-mail them to me at:

Petersj@pdx.edu

I'll post the good ones on my website.

Sandy, Utah -- Jordan High School

Sandy, Utah -- Jordan High School
Sego Lily Drive and Beet Digger Boulevard
Southeast lot (student and event parking)
Smooth, no rocks, gentle slope.

I asked permission first and they had no problems as long as I assumed responsibility for myself.

Sandy, Utah -- Sandy Civic Center UTA lot
Sego Lily Dr. (9800 S.) & 115 E.

Try the outer lots, particularly the lot farthest to the South. Even on a weekday, it is empty. You'd probably have even more options available on the weekends.

Smooth, few or no rocks, gentle slope.

South Jordan, Utah -- LANDesk corporate parking lot
698 West 10000 South
South Jordan, Utah

Lots farthest from building should be empty on weekends. You'll probably be hassled by corporate security during weekday business hours.

Smooth asphalt, moderate-gentle slope, no/few rocks.

NY, NY, Central Park

NY, NY, Central Park

Here is good link to skating Central Park.
Some slalom skating can occasionally be found either at the Bandshell or along Skater's Road. The "gates" are typically very close one after next so you got to have quick feet. Would be cool to see Harald do one run like this on one leg.

US Top Ten Places to Skate

Postby piggyslayer » Fri Jul 16, 2004 8:36 pm

Interesting web site listing top 10 skating places in US:

http://www.iisa.org/top10directory.html

most have good slalom runs.
Here is the list copied from the site:

Central Park, New York City
Boulder Creek Path, Boulder, CO
Rock Creek Park, Washington,
DC Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
The Lakes, Minneapolis, MN
Veloway at Circle C, Austin, TX
Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA T
he Strand, Pacific Palisades, CA
Lakefront Path, Chicago, IL
Ft. Lauderdale Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

I think skating on Harb Carvers there could promote the product.
