Nice job.

So how'd the camp go? Did you work on some stuff that helped you?

Jay
These are really great! Thanks for posting.

One little thing, even with high bandwidth connection I have problem
opening all the movies at once on some of your pages.

Would it be possible for you to adjust the web page and instead of
<img ...>
do
Movie Title
this way we can click on a title and view one movie at a time.

This approach will also reduce load on your web server.

Thanks again for posting these.

The carvers movie with the dog chase (#4 in the right column) was hilarious!

Yeah, we need to somehow skid through those 4 month :)

This is pretty good skiing, high level, but really not anything to jump up and down and wave flags about. I see skiing of this caliber all the time from many skiers of the ski school I work for and from the better skiers I see consistantly better skiing. Harold looks like an ex-racer who honed his style before the advent of shaped skis and although he has adapted well to the new equipment still has a few leftovers from many years of muscle memory. Diane is a smoother skier who is using the equipment more effectively but there is still a minor hitch in the getalong which produces a flat spot in the transition from turn to turn.

I realize that this is more or less Harolds forum and I am likely to get flamed for posting this but what I see is what I see.

here we go again

I came by here to see what the fuss was all about and after veiwing those clips, I have just one question and a comment or two.

I don't have a particular camp to belong to---just looking for knowledge.

The "Other side" consistently whacks HH on narrow stance. Why?

If these clips are a fair representation of the way he ski's---and more importantly, what he teaches---I did not see what I expected to see---IE: feet almost locked together. What I saw was a very functional stance that allowed some rather impressive short radius turns. The feet have to be some distance (undefinable as it may be) apart to achieve edge anges like these, otherwise the boots get tangled up with each other.

I don't have the MA eye of "Lurker" so I cannot see what he saw in turn transitions---looked pretty high level to me.

The PMTS side whacks the "Other side" (may I shorten that to OS for simplicity?) for rotary and wedge.

I'd like to know why those movements are considered so bad. I said once that those that consider these movements to be "negative" or "dead end" better never take a tumble that requires a trip down memory lane in teh "RED SLED".

Why?

Because, I never met a ski patroller that pilots a sled WITHOUT using either or both of these movements to sucessfully drive a sled EVERY time.

I also find it comforting to have these skills in my golf bag for the rare occasion when I need to pull out the ole rotary 4 iron to make that punch shot under the tree limb to an uphill green 140 yards away. Or better yet that gliding wedge into the lift line over the knoll that I didn't know was there until I crested the hill!
Whee!

Ski like a ski instructor!!!!

Postby Bodie » Fri Jul 09, 2004 9:50 am

Thanks, lurker, now I know what has been wrong with my skiing. I should have been trying to ski like ski instructors, not like Harald.

Harald is a great skier from a technical point of view. I've skied with great skiers, I watch the instructors at Vail/Beav. I've yet to see anyone, who makes a better turn than HH. Is he the best? Well, HH is 53 now. I'd say for his age, well, let me put it this way. I hope I ski that well, "...when I'm 55." :)

Yes, I want to ski like HH. His ideas about turns, are, where it's at for me. The whole idea of parallel shins and equal edge angles, it's what I think about, all the time. HH's all mountain emphasis really works for me, too. I want to ski it all, his training is focused on same.

Regarding skier_j's comments, misinformation is the norm about PMTS. Everyone thinks it's all about boot locked, because that's what those weasels on gapic say. They have no idea about what it's all about and that's a shame, because I've seen a few of them ski. Some of them over there, are downright lost, about ski technique.

But saving the weasels is a lost cause -- I'll take that time to work on my own turns. That being the case, I'll make turns with anyone, who shows up at the Big Show. Come on, come all.

In other words, "Shut the F up and ski".

Speaking of the weasels (snakeoil.com), "I can't even buhleave, it's unbuhleaveable..." (Paul Sherwin) what goes on -- or should I say, what doesn't go on -- over there.

"Psst. Hey buddy. Wanna few ski tips?"

And what happened to the anti-hh? He/she/it used to be the CEO over there. Now, it looks to me, like there's been a hostile takeover. Looks to me like Shorty is runnin the show now.

SCSA,

I guess that part of my response to the videos is that they weren't really what I expected. I expected to see more in the way of parallel leg shafts, what I saw was a little a-frame going on. Diane was skiing with more parallel shins. I expected to see a smoother transition with relaxing, retracting/lightening, tipping of the old outside about to be new inside ski leading to a flexing through the transition. Instead, I saw what looked like a rise after the belly of the turn with the foot and leg action following which produced a moment of nonengagement before the skis reengaged at the top of the next turn. I expected a consistant stance width but saw a wider stance through the transition with a narower stance through the belly of the turn. Again, I'm not saying that these turns are in any way wrong. They are very good high level turns that most of us would kill to be able to make, they just weren't what I expected.

Lurker,
Just a curiosity question, which of the videos are you looking at, Carvers or Skis?

was a little a-frame going on
...
but saw a wider stance through the transition with a narower stance through the belly of the turn.

Is it not contradictory? A-frame results in wider stance in the belly since the arc marked by the inside leg is narrower than outside arc with A-frame. Physics is physics.

Sorry to barge in, just my curiosity.
