New Andreas Spettel video

Postby B.Mulligan » Sun Oct 29, 2017 8:55 am

Just wondered what everyone thought about this. I've been a fan of all of the Reilly and Paul Lorenz videos and projected production videos, though I like some of their ancillary talents more than others. I know Reilly and Paul really like this guy Andreas Spettel. I wasn't crazy about his skiing in his previous projected video, though he's a hell of an athlete. However, this newer one on 30m comp GS skis is pretty striking, and Reilly filmed it. What do you all think? Also, what do you all think about the 'doing it ' with big radius GS skis as the new demo standard? I have seen that with Reilly and Ballou and others all making a point of using GS skis for short turn and Bump demos. Spettel was already on that jam, but it seems to be catching.

Here's the video

I have no issues with this skiing. He has almost perfect alignment, and for quicker rebound and edge changes, straighter skis are better. All the pro bump skiers use a straight skis. The skiing is more old school, like earlier Austrians, but it's typical of Richie Berger, and less like Korean or Japanese demo competition skiing. It good technique, it not PSIA twisting, steering and hard hits, like you see from the PSIA demo team. Sure it's more upright less angles, but that's what the ski gives you in short turns.

Here I'm on a straighter ski 170cm, 15 meters for short turns. Less angles, but quicker rebound.

Andy rips, no doubt about it.

Andreas is Definitely using PMTS skiing, not PSIA.

Harald, help me out here.
When I compare the shortest turns in each video (the slow motion section vs the last turns in yours) the difference that stands out to me is in your turns the ski is carving above the fall line where as Andreas ski doesn't really engage until later. You say his is PMTS skiing and of course he's flexing, CA, CB, etc.
This difference is what I'm always working on. If you were coaching Andreas to make turns more like yours what would be the focus? Early CB? Stronger pullback? ...

If he had a ski with a 15 meter radius he sure can do it, , he's on a 28 meter radius. I couldn't do it either, at least I don't think I can, haven't skied a 28m ski for almost 10 years.

Spettel has some cool videos out there. He contradicts himself sometimes, where in one of his videos, he'll promote extensions and up and down movements to warm up, then moves to flexing or "retracting" as the"skier" gets warmed up and speeds increase. He likes to do a lot of jumping and edge setting drills. I like his stuff, and he is most certainly moving more towards a PMTS platform than he was even 2 years ago. He is quite dynamic and enjoyable to watch.

As I understand it, the Austrian system teaches an up and over transition at lower levels and adopts a flex-to-release style transition at the higher levels.

During my Landes 2 exams last year early May, there was this flex-to-release style transition for higher levels but still they insisted noticeable extension after turn completion. In my course group, I was known as 'the specialist' because I was 'too dumb' to understand that I have to extend up after each turn.

Just like Reilly may not follow the APSI methodology for his own skiing, Andreas doesn't use the Austrian teaching methods for his. He did a few years ago, you can see it in his demos. He has evolved greatly in the last 2 seasons, being coached by and using fundamentally PMTS.

Andreas has incorporated the methods, movements and Essentials; of PMTS like HeluvaSkier did years ago. It's obvious in his latest skiing, very much a mirror of Richie Berger. I think, and I'll find out for myself this spring that Andreas understands skiing better than Richie.

So we see that the teaching methods used by all countries, for the public, even Austria, don't get you up to high levels of skiing. Even their best skiers have to change their skiing once they make the top level in their organizations. And the only reason they make it to these levels is because they are excellent athletes. Even if they are using techniques they have to change later, to make the highest levels of skiing, they can still look good to their enough, for their own national organizations. The Demo Team where not one of it's members has realized this yet; is the PSIA.

Reilly sent me a video of his practice on a 28m ski. Very methodically organized series of exercises to strengthen his CA, and CB. Also inside arm and pole forward with hip counter acting. His big focus is inside foot pull back, one of the hardest things to do at high speed, big angles. Everything is accentuated on the straighter skis, everything is 3 levels more difficult to achieve. So you have to be highly focused and really committed.

I skied with a PSIA demo team member (who I will leave un-named) a couple of times last season. I immediately noticed a stark difference and improvement in his skiing (from the last time I had seen him). I asked him about it and he said that he didn't like to talk about it (because of the way the PSIA is run) but he had been working on PMTS movements (he knows I am a HSS devotee). They may be unwilling to admit it for political reasons but PMTS has started to permeate the US demo team (although none of them ski at Reilly's level currently). Sometimes it takes a different messenger. Reilly has become that guy and his impact is already big and it is clearly growing.

I was on the hill today and the whole PSIA demo team was skiing and training. And I can tell you, not one of them skis PMTS. Not even close. And not one of them is close to the quality of skiing of Diana or Reilly. Diana skied circles around them. Go to my Facebook page or Blog, for evidence.

All the national Demo Teams, except, possibly the S. Koreans are stuck within their own systems. Even the Austrians. Since Reilly has really set a whole new standard, the other skiers on Demo Teams notice, they can't ski nearly as well, and the difference is obvious. Before Reilly started learning PMTS, about 3 years ago, the differences were not so obvious, so the question didn't come up. Now they all want to know what Reilly is doing. Simple PMTS movements, the same way Steff Gross, Anna Fenninger and Marcel Hirscher are skiing.
