For Balance, standing on one leg to do up my shoe laces. Got that idea from someone on this forum, can't remember who.

SUMMER training????

Heck we have an easy 5 weeks of skiing left!! Week and half at Vail, then A Basin baby!

It may be Slush City, but I have plenty of time left to cement my bad habits!!

Carvers anyone? Thanks to the excellent and freely available DIY guide from HSS, i've already picked up all the materials I need to build a pair of my own! Look for my carver videos in MA!

Sadly, there are no hills in Louisiana on which to use Carvers. :(

I've had one of these for a couple of years and my balance has improved a bunch.

I've added the head motions advocated by Z-Health to all of my balancing activities (balance board, bosu ball, slantboard work) and it has done wonders. The last exercise in their Balance Gym program involves walking forward & backwards while looking (moving head & scanning eyes) horizontally 5-10x, then vertically & diagonally (both directions).

Theoretically this engages the semicircular canals (the balance organ/inner ear) in each direction as you have a horizontal, vertical, & diagonal canal. It also supposedly helps train the vestibulo-ocular reflex which is involved in stabilizing vision while in motion (useful). I started the full Balance Gym but ultimately found it better to just add the head movements to the other things I was already doing. It doesn't take any extra time and also gives me something to focus on besides a timer when standing on one foot.

I was really shocked by how fast this worked, within a week I was able to stand on a moving train without holding on. It's an easy way to supercharge any balance training regimen. Although I'm pretty sure if I tried this while walking on Max_501's Slackstand I'd just end up falling on my a**.

Surfing
Cycling
Yoga
Hiking/uphill trail sprints
Strength training
Balance - wobble, bosu, etc. (that slackline Max posted looks great)

Honestly, probably the best targeted training I've done for skiing is the one Harald and Diana put together on the pmts site: http://pmts.org/index.php/fit-to-ski

I am training with inspiration from Mattias Hargin (Swedish wc skier) training videos. His training is developed by Andreas Öhgren and Seth Ronland at 3d Funktion. Mattias is more fit than ever after the switch from traditional training.

The German Ski Federation is also inspired:

In the introductory video https://vimeo.com/139074141 they emphasize that you should stop immediately if feeling pain when doing the exercise. The 12 videos at https://vimeo.com/mattiashargin are in swedish...
#1 Warm-up
