Wow, that is brutal and a loss for all of us who love to watch her ski. Certainly changes the landscape for the overall and GS globes.

Thanks for the video, Max. It's not clear to me what went wrong. Her movements rounding the last gate looked okay. Angles were extreme, near booting-out, but she's used to that. Right in the fall line her skis lost their clean carve and started spraying snow (rotating, maybe?) I presume things went badly after that.

Boot out?
Unexpected patch of soft snow?
Or....?

Even the best get too much weight on the inside ski and that's what happened here. She leaned in too much, inside ski grabbed and she couldn't recover.

Thanks, JBotti. That helps... I now see the ski weighting problems and they began well before the actual fall. Stepping frame-by-frame through her transition above the last gate, we see:
1. a slightly wider than normal stance; and
2. a touch of A-framing.

These were not critical errors but they indicate less than ideal balance, which may have contributed to what happened next:
3. an attempt to make her preferred, aggressive Von Grueningen transition by staying on the L ski; but, simultaneously
4. a premature (defensive?) extension of the R leg very early in the high C, which weighted its BTE.
This resulted in a momentary stem or wedge in the high C, with both skis on their BTE and weighted.

Wedged and weighted skis want to converge/cross tips, which would be fatal at these speeds. She avoided that, but it probably impaired her (usually perfect) balance. Then came the inside lean, skis grabbing while still going in slightly different directions, and the fall.

In retrospect, she might have avoided this by not doing either #3 or #4. That could have created a controlled turn, though with a longer radius than she wanted. The price WC racers pay for skiing on the edge of control/disaster to optimize speed and line.

At 0.13 she was in a strange stem position, the tips of her ski were pointed inward, at 0.14 - 0.15 it seemed the transfer was done, but obviously too much weight went on the inside ski and at 0.18 she was down.

Crashes happen in gates all the time, its just part of the game given the need for speed.

On the changing landscape with Fenninger out, Shiffrin was second today at Soelden. I haven't watched it yet, but it appears that she skied well enough to podium even if Fenninger was racing. If she consistently podiums in GS (and wins 1 or 2) she will be in strong contention for the overall (assuming she continues to dominate in slalom). Lets hope the morons coaching her don't destroy her with racing Super G!
