Opinion needed Dynastar Omecarve/other intermediate carvers

Postby Defcon » Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:31 am

I'm considering buying my first skis. I'm an intermediate and stay mostly on the groomed stuff. From reading some posts it seems that for effective PMTS (i.e. high edge angles) even beginners should consider a ski marketed more towards advanced skiers.

I'd like opinions on the Omecarve line (since I'm getting a good deal on it and I'm on a budget). Specifically Omecarve 7 from here - http://www.cupolosports.com/dyskom7skipk.html

Read about Head Superhsapes, Fischer Rx8 etc here but they are all $400-500+ and thus out of my reach. Other suggestions are welcome.

Although I can see why you would infer the above from the posts, I don't believe that is the case. The Head iC160 (now 260i) and the Head XRC 800 are skis that I have been recommended a lot. The K2 Escpae 5500 (and Omni 5.5) are skis in that same category, skis that are good for beginners that don't get quickly outgrown.

I don't know the Omecarve, so no help there.

Defcon, my guess is that you could possibly find a deal on last years XRC 800's. This is a ski that Harlald especially likes for intermediate skiers (along with the old IC 160). JB.

I found the XRC 800 with SD 11 bindings on ebay for 349. XRC 500 with same bindings is 299. That seems like it will fit within my budget.

The problem is they are only in 156 or 177cm. I am 5'8 and 165lb, so 177 is definitely too long.

Is 156 too short or should I go for it?

I think 163 is the length

I think 156 is too short. 163 is probably the correct length.

I also would limit yourself to the XRC800 and eliminate the XRC500.

Be patient, things in the northeast/mid atlantic have been pretty warm, sales may start showing up.
