anyone find a mouth covering they like that also can serve as a neck gaiter or a full on balaclava? had an old outdoor research one that was pretty close, but not quite there pre covid that sadly has ripped and had mouth holes anyways

My kids do love their Junior models. I may grab one for myself!

dougtee,

I had the one you posted the link to, did not work for me at all.
Have not tried the one KJL showed, not sure if it works well either.

What works for me is the cheap Winter Ski Mask Balaclava but I made a simple modifications to it. I used a 6" GearTie in a fashion similar the wire is used in the regular face mask. Just wrap the balaclava fleece around the tie so that the wrap goes inside the balaclava and saw by hand with the black thread. The tie will become the bottom edge of the balaclava face opening. The tie is easy to bend to the shape of your nose and is quite sturdy. It also creates a tighter fleece to face match so the goggles fog less. If you are wearing it down you can easily straighten the tie and re-shape it later if needed.

That's brilliant.

As far as off-the-shelf versions of that, I was eyeing these:

They're suspiciously on a huge sale, though. Criticisms seem to be that the provided filters don't stay put.

In case anyone is curious, I've since received my own order for both the Essential Lightweight Ubertube Kit as well as the Bandana Kit. (Neither is a full balaclava like dougtee was looking for, but it might help someone regardless).

Both are pretty awesome, but the Ubertube fit me much better. The Bandana wants to pull downwards which then tugs on the ear loops.

Both have nose wires which is essential (ha!) for securing the mask under my eyeglasses' nosepads to reduce fogging.

The included filters are really floppy on purpose so that they collapse kinda sorta like the silky Ubertube material itself, but the downside is that they also like to shift in their holder unless I pull the mask down more carefully.

For riding up on a gondola or a quick pop in for the restroom ... gold.
