Head 2018-2019 V Series

Postby jbotti » Tue Feb 27, 2018 9:31 am

For those that have lamented the loss of the IM 78 (or the Peak 84 as well) and have wanted a good PMTS all mountain ski it appears that Head has made some nice skis like this for next year. Harald skied the V series skis (don't know which specific ones he skied) and liked them. They range from 75-85mm under foot. They have marketing rocker (not really any) and full camber. The low numbered ones appear to be quite soft but the V6-V10 may be what many are looking for. I'll see if i can find out which ones Harald skied and liked.

Here is brief video outlining the series.

Has anyone got anymore details on these? I'm looking specifically at the V10, mainly for deeper snow above 6" or crud. Something to complement my TT80's

All John said I would agree with. I will be very interested to see what John finds out as to the ones Harald liked. As John said I don't believe I'd drop below the V6. Not "enough ski". From my personal experience:

1. I owned the V6 in a 170 last year. Excellent ski. Makes great rounded arcs. Friendly and forgiving.
2. For next year I have the 2020 model V8. I touch narrower than the V6 and slightly quicker for me edge to edge.
3. V 10 - remember this one is 85 mm in the waist, so quite wide for a PMTS ski. But plenty of float for me at Grand Targhee. Requires more tipping when carving ( 85 mm waist). I'll be curious as to Harald's comments on this one -- as 85 mm is up in the waist range of the Supershape Titan which he has not cared for.

So far my favorite -- the V8. Perhaps because I'm a car nut. A bit more edge hold than the V6 ( but a bit less playful and forgiving). Goes well as a combination with my Supershapes.

My ski patrol buddy liked the V6's so well he bought them from me. His skiing noticeably improved. Shorter, rounder more finished turns.
A few facts:

1. V6 in 170 cm 13.5 m radius - 78 mm waist
2. V8 in 170 cm 13.2 radius - 75 mm waist
3. V10 in 170 13.6 radius 85 mm waist.

So far as I know the skis are unchanged from 2019 -- just slightly different paint jobs.

Is there a consensus already that the V 8 is a good option to replace the IM 78 ? Does the ski reward PMTS movements?

I think people have to be careful with these skis. I spoke with HH and Diana about them at the end of last season. They just don't think there is enough there there. I have not skied but I have heard from others that many of them are pretty soft. As for me saying that Harald liked them, I may have been mistaken. I don't think they are bad skis, just not close to special.

They have a very obvious "speed limit" that you'll hit before you get past about 30 mph. They're not bad when used at slow speeds. They have a nice amount of sidecut and good tip shape.

Good to know. Thank you for the clarification jbotti and HighAngles ! No wonder Harald and Diana say there is not enough there. This is a frontside ski ( or may be all mountain) with no metal, so it should be pretty soft.I saw some positive feedback about the v shape line on this forum here and there so that’s why I decided to clarify. Thanks again ! It remains a difficult task however to find a replacement of the IM 78 nowadays. This V 8 thing looked good at least on paper...

They may not be available in your area, but if you have good PMTS skills the Blossom White Out would be the ski to get to replace the old IM78. Its a better ski than the IM78 and they may still have them at the HSS shop and I'm sure they could ship to you.

I actually received a photo from the shop this week, and it looked like there were three pairs of 176cm White Outs and one pair of 170cm White Outs remaining.

Love love love the Blossom Whiteout. Frontside, backside, groomers, crud, whatever, flat out a great ski for Vail.

Except last Friday, when we were hit with over 26 inches of fresh cement. Not fun skiing on a 77 Mm waisted ski. I am not a good enough skier to ski that crap.

But earlier that week....5-6 inches of fresh powder over groomed terrain....heaven. That day was simply sublime.

Buy them before they are sold out!!

All good points here from jbotti,Heluva and Vailskier about the Blossom ski. I found a local Blossom dealer in my city ( believe it or not) and he presents the White Out as a ‘ race ski ‘ on a wider platform ‘.I’m leaning however towards cutting this 78-80 mm segment off my ski quiver. For where I ski I may limit myself to a skinny frontside carver (i speed) and a wider ski for the big snow days (rev 98)
