Give a Fischer Progressor 800 a try if you get a chance. They're a slightly wider (74mm) descendant of their classic RX8 model. They feel very light and are extremely easy to turn, with lots of pop to them, although they do get unstable at speed. In Europe at least you could also get great prices on them, I guess because they are extremely popular.

Older Supershape magnum or newer speed.

Postby euro-skier » Sat Jan 17, 2015 4:36 pm

I have been looking on Ebay for bargains on new skis of previous year's models. I found some cheap supershape magnums from the 2012/2013 season (so these are the white skis with the green text on it and dimensions of 121/71/107 mm), and I also found some affordable supershape speeds from the 2013/2014 season (black skis), and even from current season. Unfortunately I couldn't find any regular supershapes from 2012/2013.

I know that you guys think that the new speed is superior to the new magnum for learning pmts. But how do you feel about the older model magnum? I am considering getting that as it is the cheapest, and I think that the smaller radius + being a bit wider might help my skiing respectively on the groomed and ungroomed.

For some background:
I currently ski a very old Fischer rc4 worldcup with a 15 m radius that I got second hand years ago; I am replacing those because they are used up, and the bindings are unreliable. Generally I think these Fischers are a bit too stiff, certainly in the off-piste, and the radius could be a bit tighter. I wouldn't say I am a textbook pmts skier, but I aspire to be although I must admit that I don't spend much time practicing as I only get a few snow days a year.

Would really appreciate your opinions on the 2012/2013 magnums vs. the 2013/2014 or 2014/2015 speeds.

What length are you looking for? I notice your handle is euro-skier, and Europe still has them in 177, 165, and 160.

theorist: I am looking for a pair of skis 1.7 m long. I did find some of the lengths you list, but not 170 cm.

I owned a pair of the 2011/2012 Magnums, and have spent a couple of days on the 2013/2014 version. The newer version is stiffer than the older model, and comes alive at higher speeds, but is not as versatile for all mountain skiing as the 2012, IMO. I have no experience with the new Speeds. A narrower waist will always be easier to tip, but if you are only going to have one pair for everything, then the 2012/13 Magnum would be a good choice.
