Learning PMTS - Ski recommendations

Postby sym95734 » Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:54 am

Hi,

I am looking for a frontside ski that will support PMTS drills & movements and that is not to stiff to manage at low speed.

Any good recommendations from the PMTS experts?.

A little bit about me
- 47 yr, 146 lbs, 5'9"
- I've been skiing for the last 5 years out east and ski in Grunenwald Switzerland, Hintertux Austria and out west (mostly Jackson Hole, A-Basin and Utah) every year.

My current skis are
- Rossignol Experience 88 - 163cm (I am ready to upgrade to the 172cm)
- Rossignol Soul 7 - 180cm
- Salomon 24 hours max - 171cm

I am wondering if my current Salomon 24 hours max could be a good PMTS ski, I find them a little bit stiff at slow speed for PMTS training.

In the term of length I am thinking around 163cm,

Thanks for any help.

Few years back Harald posted a list of recommended skis. I wish it would be up to date, but unfortunately it's not.

When it comes to ski recommendations I have a very simple criteria -- I just look on what skis the coaches are using in the camp.
Last year I saw Head Rebels iSL (non FIS), iSS Speed and iSS (old model which you can still buy in Europe). One coach was on Elan SLX.

So there is your answer :). The other brands / models might be good or bad so I don't take a chance. I am on Rebels iSL and am very happy with them but like I mentioned my reference does not matter :)

Thanks Todd,

I am reading about the supershape speed and they seem very good for PMTS. They are very hard to find at the moment in the 163cm length :(

Confirming the i.SS Speed... a very good PMTS ski, responsive at both lower and higher speeds.

As to length, I'm 14 years older than you, 12 pounds lighter and 1" taller. ~30 years of skiing, mostly in New England with 1-2 trips West each year.
Diana recommended 163cm for me and they work extremely well for this purpose.

Hope you can find a pair.

Hi DougD,

Thanks for confirming the i.SS Speed, if I can find one at 163cm I am thinking to get them.

Today I found Head I Supershape speed skis 163 with head PRD 14 S bindings. they were on sale in the UK last pair available and would have been cheaper in Austria but all those I located there were with the PRX ? binding, so after reading this forum and not wishing a higher delta I have pulled the trigger.
Pretty excited

I tested both the iSL and the iSS Speed. I liked them both very much! What I realised is that the iSL is stiffer, so to use it properly I guess you have to be a good PMTS skier. That's why I went for the Supershape. I'm a beginning PMTS Skier and for now teach myself. To me the iSS is easier to bend, i.e. to me it is more versatile and I feel more comfortbale. I have to admit though, that the icehold of the iSL is phenomenal!

I have chosen to look at myself as a complete beginner and therefore chose to buy a tool that will I hope be a good choice to aid as rapid a progress as I can manage. I am happy you made the same choice after having demoed this and the SL. I will see how things go and hope to buy tools and learn to look after my own skis as well so the speed could be in for a hard time !
