Summary of skiing over 2 years: I’m at a wall

Postby Townicus » Thu Jan 10, 2019 8:23 am

Good morning!

I’ve been practicing PMTS for 4 years. Here’s a summary of my skiing over the last 2 years. A variety of terrain, turn shapes, and snow conditions.

In longer turns, seems I’m static, no progressive tipping, weak counteracting/balancing, some extension, and too much tip lead.

I practice the drills fairly consistently, but just seem static in my movements. My spine is fused from T1-L2 so could be some biomechanical limitation and this is as far as I’ll ever get.

All skiing is done on a Supershape ispeed in a 177. Boots are Head Raptor 130 RS.

I don't feel that I'm qualified to comment on your skiing (I've only gone to one camp). As you wait for a response from someone who is qualified, take a look at the following list of checkpoints created by Max501:

Is the stance width appropriate for the size of the skier?
Does the release start by flexing the outside leg?
Does LTE tipping lead engagement to the new turn?
Are the feet pulled back at transition?
Is the inside foot held back throughout the turn?
Is there enough CB and CA and is the timing right?
Is the pelvis included in the CB/CA movement?
Strong inside arm?
Is the inside leg flexed as the turn progresses?
Does the outside leg extend naturally (no pushing) as the turn progresses?
Does LTE tipping continue throughout the turn?
Is the skier balanced over the outside ski?
Is there a pole touch and how is the movement and timing?
Alignment - watch the skis and knees carefully - does anything look like it needs to be tipped in or out?

My goal is to shorten my long radius turns; seems I ride the arc too long.
I hope to create larger angles to facilitate more grip, although I tend to hold ok on ice.
In general, my goal is to optimize my movements, to become the best skier I can.

Thanks for all the help.

Has you alignment been checked and are you using custom foot beds?

Looks like your stance is your biggest limitation, back seat and parking the turns is the result. Sure you ski fast and big turns, but you are waiting for the side cut to dictate your turns. You can benefit with a total and complete alignment evaluation.

Thanks for the replies so far. I do have custom footbeds, and nothing more than a cuff alignment. It appears I’m knocked kneed (A framed) in most of my turns.

I’m in the Vail Valley; assuming I should make an appointment with a qualified tech at Harb’s shop in Dumont?

Yes you should. If you are serious about improving, having proper boot alignment will be the best time/money you will ever spend. Second best will be getting some live coaching with a PMTS instructor.
