Video Analysis Using the Ipad

Video Analysis Using the Ipad

Postby skijim13 » Thu Nov 19, 2015 7:55 am

We bought an Ipad, since it has great resolution, and is easy to take with us to the mountain along with our Sony Digital Camcorder. The problem I discovered is the the Ipad uses MP4 format and the video camera uses AVCHD and will not allow a direct download without a computer to convert the file. The reason I got the Ipad is so I would not need to bring the computer to the mountain. Does anyone have any suggestions? My only idea is to purchase a new video camera that records in MP4 format.

My camcorder's not a Sony, but it can be can be switched, in its preferences settings, to record in MP4. And it appears this feature is available with at least some of the Sonys as well (http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-i ... nfo_id=810 and https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/d ... 4/c/65,66/ and https://community.sony.com/t5/Camcorder ... d-p/374568). Sorry if I'm suggesting something you've already tried but, if not, it's worth a look in the online manual to see if that's an option with yours.

Try VLC for iOS http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ios.html. It's free...

Hmmmm, i was using the ipad no problems last season. The biggest issue i faced was how to get the video footage from the camera onto the ipad...
I think my camera had a setting to save the footage as an mp4 file...ultimately, it was easier to use an iPhone 5s or better to capture the footage..

Don't forget to use this app to study your footage..

The process I use for video analysis:
1. shoot the video using a video camera with zoom and image stabilization(Panasonic HC-X920 in my case) and an optical viewfinder (to cut down on glare), captured in iframe/mp4 format and saved to the SD card
2. upload from the SD card into the camera roll of the iPad
3. then use Coach's Eye to suck it from Camera Roll into the app
4. finally, use the finger driven forward and back and slo-mo in the Coach's Eye app to really see what is going on

It's cumbersome for sure. Will try out the other apps to see if it can be simplified.

Shooting with an iphone really doesn't cut it because it hard to get enough detail to see what the feet are doing unless you just get one or two turns. Max501 has commented on this in the past.

For all the complexity, it is really worth it. The large image and the frame by frame makes previously invisible movements glaringly obvious to all. Bring ego strength to the activity!

Thanks for all the info solved the problem by purchasing a new video camera that records also in MP4 and has WIFI built in that sends the files directly to the IPAD, will look at all the analysis software everyone suggested.
