New to PMTS -- really digs it

Postby bowlhiker » Mon Jan 06, 2014 9:28 pm

Howdy,

Meet my friend who I'll call R2. He's a young guy, has a degree in fitness, writes columns for the Failed Daily (aka Vail Daily). Really great guy, I love him. He genuinely wants to learn PMTS and take his skills up a few notches. I think he created a user name here, he'll fill in more details.

Today was our first day of taking some videos. I tried to tell him all I know, which as most of you know, isn't much. But I'm trying. R2 has skied with me, or should I say I've skied with him and some other young fellas for a couple years now.

Today we didn't do any drills, just talked about some concepts and then I turned the camera on. Here's the link:

I'll bow out now. I gotta be careful about having conversations with people who aren't there. You get that.

Please help my friend. There's plenty more like him who are watching. Gracias.

R2 will need to channel his efforts coming out of this new interest in PMTS if he truly wants to rebuild his skiing and not just "dabble" in PMTS with a few tips. The videos you posted show the classic turn problems; going for the BTE first and using wedge entries. He's going to have to be willing to slow it down, hit the green slopes, and really learn how to tip correctly.

High Angles,

This is R2. What is BTE?

I am willing to rebuild my skiing. I just need guidance
on what the focus should be. These videos although skiing
somewhat fast, is a mere crawl compared to the
skiing I normally engage in. It has taken a commitment
to actively slow down.

Also, my spine is fused from T2-L2 so I have a particularly
awkward difficult time counteracting. I am working hard on this.
Any feedback is warmly welcomed!

Thanks!

Townicus - the fusing of your spine may actually work to your advantage since counteracting should come from hip/pelvis movement/position and not from twisting of the spine.

I saw your posts on the Epic forum. I hate to say this, but to truly get the most out of PMTS you will have to make a choice about what direction you want to go with in improving your skiing. You're not going to get the educational info you need from Epic (many of us have been there and experienced the damage that can be caused from that instructional forum). PMTS is a fully comprehensive program - it has no missing pieces - so there's no need to go anywhere else to improve your skiing.

BTE = Big Toe Edge

As is often repeated here, get yourself a copy of Harald's "Anyone Can Be An Expert Skier" Book 1. Start there. Learn it, Live it, Love it. :D

High Angles-

Thanks for the input. You are right about my spine
as I have pondered this. CA and CB feels really awkward to
me though. In the second bump video, I was really trying
to CA and CB but it felt really uninspiring. Most
of that skiing we captured felt awkward as I was
trying to exaggerate moves I am unfamiliar with.

You did a good job of tipping the inside ski after the transition. That's actually a good starting point, as it gives the learner immediate improvement.
Since you ski with Bowlhiker, you can obviously see that there is much more to it. You have a great resource with Bowlhiker, he is a very good skier and has a good understanding of PMTS. But also take advantage of your location in Colorado and get to Harald's shop to get any equipment issues sorted out.

Here's a useful glossary of terms

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1380

Some other terms bandied about on this forum:

TTS = Traditional Teaching Systems
SMIM = Single Most Important Movement
Skiing: falling down the mountain with style.

Good spot...

Exaggerate, exaggerate exaggerate....tip, tip and tip some more....

I showed these videos to my dad - he couldn't believe how much he had to flex to get this amount of movement (ie: tipping). He now runs through dry tipping/ flexing drills every morning before skiing. He affectionately calls it, "doing his Haralds"..

The joys of being retired, where you(he) can spend a whole season being a ski bum..AND getting cheap lift tickets..
