What happens to skiers that learn PMTS!

Counter acting and counter balance are tied together, one is not as strong as it should be without the other.

All skiers don't realize how much they are steering, until they stop! The only way you know you have stopped is to have proof, as in these photos. David Chodounsky, great guy, great skier. What he doesn't know, he's never going make the podium, because he steers with his hips.

Funny, that was the first thing I thought when I saw the picture of Chodunsky from U.S. Nationals in the Ski Racing Magazine article. His picture is right next to Mikaela's and it is night and day. David's picture is all upper-body rotation and knee drive. Mikaela has so much counteracting that her inside hand is actually below the the gate. Chodounsky is the complete opposite. Too bad he doesn't have anyone to give him the obvious feedback on how to improve his results...

I was watching a replay of a World Cup slalom of Stefano Gross and the announcer said not to copy his style because of all the upper body rotation he has. Is that typical of his turns or was it more of a few bad turns the announcer noticed rotation?

Geoffda, thanks for that link. The differences couldn't be more stark, at least to PMTS-trained eyes. Chodunsky's hips are facing his skis' direction of travel, maybe even inside a bit. Schiffrin's are aimed right over her stance ski tip (invisible in the photo). Those who believe they can just lazily ski into counter should study photos like this. Schiffy did not attain this powerful position by accident. Oh... and she won this (admittedly not WC) race by nearly 7 seconds.

How lucky we PMTS students are to be given access to the movements that yield such skiing and such results. Kudos to you and all the coaches who share this knowledge here, in camps and in the books and videos.

Well put.

If you dive a bit deeper into the article you will see that roughly 50% of the top 20 seeded men and more than 50% of the top 20 seeded women failed to complete both runs. The snow conditions were hard and the course set, while technically challenging did not appear to particularly difficult. What you are seeing is evidence of failure to execute the technical fundamentals by the best in the country.

FWIW - MS won the first run by ~6 seconds and the second by ~1 second. Dollars to doughnuts she dialed it back the second run, otherwise her margin would have been 10+ seconds..........That is almost beyond comprehension.

Ski well. Ski fast. Have fun.

MS had a poor 2nd run, many mistakes for her skiing ability. You are right, she could have won by 8 seconds. This is a testament to the US Ski Team's development program and coaching. Same goes on the men's side. The men's coaching staff should be cleaned out and started over. However, there are no better coaches in the country to take over. The US Ski Team keeps hoping their Austrian coaches will do the job, but the ones they hire are the ones the Austrians discard.

As Geoffda said yesterday, if the less talented than Shiffrin had some good coaching, we would have more kids that would have a chance at qualifying for top 30. Look at the men's and women's teams. The guys that come close to qualifying are all over 27 years old. Chodounsky is 30. And Chodounsky is the only US slalom skier close to the top 10. They have to figure this all out for themselves. It takes 10 years on the world cup.

Look at the Austrians. Last year they had 2 or maybe 3 slalom skiers including Hirscher who could make the top 30 cut. Now they have 6 guys who can make the cut regularly. Where did Schwartz, Feller, Digruber, Matt, come from all in one season????? They had 3 Austrians in the top 6 in one slalom without Hirscher even finishing. Watch out for next season, they are going to push each other, even push Hirscher.

The Norwegians are equally successful in speed, but don't have the same depth in GS, or slalom. And the Norwegians have 2 women in the top 30 as well. A nation of 5 million people. Something is dreadfully wrong in the US system, we are getting killed. We always have to wait for the super talents to emerge, rarely do we have skiers that are developed through or by the US Ski Team.
