CA and CB exercises

Postby Robert0325 » Tue Oct 20, 2015 4:07 pm

I have all of Haralds books accept for the instructor manuals and quite a few of the evideos and also the Performance Free Skiing DVD. However, I feel I'm neglecting CA and CB exercises so was considering downloading the "Essentials 2 Complete Upper Body eVideo" or should I consider the Angry Mother evideos? I'm sure they're all good but would like some guidance as to which I should look at first.

The Complete Upper Body video has many excellent drills to complement the first two books. However, developing students should still follow the progression in Book 1 and then Book 2.

Thanks Max, Yes I still regularly refer to the books, particularly book 2.
Regarding the eVideo's do you have an opinion as weather I should get the Complete Upper Body video first or the Angry Mothers as they seem to address the same subjects?

I would like to reiterate what Max said and save you some time. I remember my first PMTS camp. All I worked on the entire time was tipping. Pretty much for at least my first year my SMIM (single most important movement that needs to be addressed) was tipping. BTW, this is pretty much the case for all new PMTS skiers. The concept of CA and CB isn't even introduced to a skier until tipping is at a high enough level even when there is none in their skiing. We can only learn and focus on one thing at a time. Tipping is the cake. CA and CB is icing at least for the learning PMTS skier. Do yourself a favor, start at book 1 chapter one and don't go any further until you have mastered each skill.

Very few do this, but those that do ski much better much faster than those that don't.
Balance: Essential in skiing and in life!

I've been following PMTS for 4 years now and worked through the exercises in both book 1 and 2. Happy to stick with tipping if that's really what is required, but at this rate at age 52 my skiing days will be over before I cover off all the essentials!

Did you work through each chapter and confirm that each exercise was mastered before moving to the next?

I think I have. Weather I've mastered each exercise could be debated as I'm doing my own analysis which of course could be floored.
But leaving that aside for a moment I'm a bit confused, I thought the Essentials Videos can be used to complement the books as they include many more drills than those included in book 1 and 2. As an example I downloaded the Essential video that covers flexing and fore/aft a while ago and I found in particular the pull back exercises really helped me improve some of the exercises I was struggling with in book 2. That is why I was considering the full upper body vid or perhaps the Angry Mothers?

Robert without a way to check it is very easy to do it wrong. Can you post a video if you do good way to check if you are doing it correcly. Try the tipping board drill and do each move one at a time, tip with inside foot first uphill, then downhill foot, then CB, and then CA, you can use a rod with tape in the center to see if you are doing it correctly. All this is shown in the tipping board drills on the website.

What method are you using for confirmation?

I think the Upper Body video is great and I'd probably start there for CA/CB specific drills.

Well it's not an exact science, but I review what I "think" I've achieved to the "Performance Check" sections in the books.
Thanks for the advise on CA/CB specific drills.

Unfortunately how it feels rarely works for confirmation. There are really only two options for confirming proper execution of the exercises - either video or the having another trained PMTS skier watch your skiing.
