Boot Boards

In a diffrent thread Harald talked recently about flexible boot boards. I am totally unfamiliar with them. Over Xmas I looked I my friends boots (he is on a Canadian team) and noticed that his boot board was broken into 4 pieces and taped with Duct tape. At the time I did not connect and did not ask him, I was just surprised that he did not get a new boot board. Could there be a connection between flexible boot boards and broken (intentioanlly) ones ?
