Check lists, photos for every one of the HHS checks

Postby h.harb » Fri Mar 15, 2013 9:52 pm

I'm working on a photo for everyone of these PMTS checks.

Is the stance width appropriate for the size of the skier?
Does the release start by flexing the outside leg?
Is there a transfer to the LTE?
Does LTE tipping lead engagement to the new turn?
Is there a point in the transition where both legs are flexed equally?
Are the feet pulled back at transition?
Is the inside foot held back throughout the turn?
Is there enough CB and CA and is the timing right?
Is the pelvis included in the CB/CA movement Inside hip higher?
Strong inside arm, pole tip moving forward?
Is the inside leg flexing and tipping as the turn progresses?
Does the outside leg extend naturally (no pushing) as the turn progresses?
Does LTE tipping of the inside foot continue throughout the turn?
Does the weight shift go to the LTE during transition?
Is the skier balanced over the outside ski?
Is there a pole touch and how is the movement and timing?
Is the pole touch a no swing?
Alignment - watch the skis and knees carefully - does anything look like it needs go be tipped in or out?

Wow, I know it's all there in the videos (I don't have the books) and blogs but this is a great idea both from a forum point of view and otherwise. The photos should serve as ready and available references for help. Thanks in advance.

That would be fantastic, especially for self MA!
It would be even better to have a wrong movement photo to compare, but I guess it is not always possible.

I think the montage featured in Essentials shows everything on the list.

I will throw out this idea. The pictures with the checks is excellent. I think it will help to explain to skeptics what this all about as well as give us an everyday tool to try to put together as many "checks" as we can. Even though the info is laid out elsewhere it would be a great tool.

But several times lately several of you have noted that movement is better than static images. So how about, as an additional project, a 3 to 5 second mini-clip to go with each check? That would not only pinpoint where in the turn the check is used but also some of the forces involved that don't come across in a still.

There are many approaches to conveying visual images. I like the one frame idea for this is good right now, because it's easy to remember and focus on one image, while you are out practicing. Put one image in your mind (load it on your phone) and shot for that image while you are skiing. You have to figure out exactly where in the arc or transition the image happens and how to prepare to get to the image focus. Using one frame rather than multi images, even for short bursts, maybe too much info to process.

If you want to get serious, have someone take video or photos and compare your reference points to the ones on the forum.

OK, thanks Max, I was searching and searching but didn't find it. Also I built another forum under the title of "Harb Ski Systems's List of skiing check points". Soon to be available.

This is Great, but I agree with Harald - as I'm a big believer in the KISS principle - Keep it Simple S..p.

Imagine having this list with each check point and it's relevant pic, as a quick reference tool on your smart phone to study on each ride up the hill on the chair.

PS. Harald, we will sorely miss you, Diana, Chris and the rest of the team this year as we aren't able to make the trip from down under.

Love the new uniforms by the way - Red, White and Blue - you can't go wrong - Go Team Harb!

Checkpoint. Is there transfer to the LTE?

This doesn't mention which ski. Is this not dependent on the type of release. Eg weighted release.

In ski racing a weighted release is a high level flexing release generated by a very quick outside leg retraction, without a transfer to the new ski until the falline. This is not in the "Check List" because it's not appropriate for regular skiers. A weighted release in PMTS teaching, is an exercise to cure a push off. So you have the equally knees bent in the transition already in the "Check list", double knee release or two footed release and or the Phantom Move release, to the LTE are also included.

Is there anything more to the weighted release for racing?

A weighted release is a weighted release... how long the skier chooses to delay tipping from LTE to BTE is more of a tactical decision in racing. For your purposes right now BigE [purely based off last season's video], I would think you'd be using this as it is presented in Book 2, to cure a push-off and better learn LTE balance through R-T-E.

Please let's not jump to conclusions. (a) It's not for me. (b) You've not seen video yet of this season's progress.

Thanks.
