Off Piste Skiing

Postby Max_501 » Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:10 pm

Hiked up to the top of Bachelor to get to our steeper off piste skiing. The snow was an uneven wind sculpted and packed surface. At the top of the turn the skis were mostly on top of the snow but once pressure built the skis would punch through. Fun but challenging conditions. These type of conditions require enough speed to blast through the wind packed snow.

I was testing a pair of skis for a friend so I'm on a 183cm Elan 1010, 140-111-130, 23M radius.

A short turn made towards the bottom of the picture above.

This area had been heavily sculpted by the wind. It wasn't as steep so I decided to ski it with GS arcs.

Zoomed in from the picture above (gotta get that inside hand up, but at least the hips are level).

This shot shows early edge engagement (often referred to as being upside down because the edges face up the hill).

Freakin' great shots. Never mind the excellent skiing... shots #4 and #5 should be blown up into posters!

Great ad for PMTS , technically very solid in difficult conditions . The difficulty can be seen in some of the chunks of hard snow coming out of the skiers " exhaust trail " .

That's a great photo! All the Epic critics, that did MA on your skiing a few years ago are now, taking a deep breath and reevaluating their lives.

You want to see the amount of PMTS Counter Acting needed to get the job done, this it.
This is done without hip dumping or "Park and Ride".

So can we get some ideas together to help Max break out of his intermediate rut?

That first shot made me gasp...whoa!
Testing skis on that...
So what did you think of those wide boards...180s are pretty long nowadays! But you make them look like carving machines. Lookin' good, Max!
Very nice.

Its amazing how much I had to focus on tipping to get this big ski up on edge! Look at these specs

Tip: 140mm
Waist: 111mm
Tail:130mm

I had to tip like crazy to get them to perform. But, I have to admit, they did perform in these conditions.

Are your turns to the left your weaker side in these conditions Max501?

Generally my turns to the left have less CA and CB. I don't think conditions have anything to do with it. Is there something in that turn that looks weak to you?

Fore/Aft

but given the slope, I'm sure it's a one off.

I was probably skiing this more neutral due to the type of snow. I didn't want the tip punching through first and diving under the heavier top layers. I was also careful with the timing and amount of the outside leg extension. All that said, I could easily have been aft at that point, managing fore/aft in this type of snow was quite a challenge. FUN for sure, but a constant challenge to stay in the right spot.

Great skiing as always Max! It is amazing that no matter where PMTS is done (terrain, conditions, region, etc.) it always looks the same and uses the same good movements.
