I'm not so sure it is the "look" that is important. Sure the skiing "looks" cool, but the most important part about it is that it WORKS. It isn't about aiming at some aesthetically pleasing target like in some schools of thought, but rather about function, efficiency, and correct movement based on how the human body works. I agree that PMTS "looks" great when done well, but the beauty behind it is not necessarily the aesthetics. IMO anyway.

Nice. Is that ice covering the tree in the first pic?

Yes, the previous day was a mix of rain and snow, with a topping of high winds. Much of the day was dust on raincrust. However, it warmed up in the afternoon resulting in a really sweet snow surface that was very similiar to Mammoth windpack.

Alot of the storms that hit Baldy end up with a bit of rain at the end. So along with rime on every tree and structure, there is frequently a crust of varying degrees, from negligable to thick and bulletproof- and you never know which you are going to get until you are on it!. The upside is that the day after a storm is usually warm enough to make corn snow on top of powder, which is really delicious to ski.

Yes, function is foremost. But one thing I notice with practically all athletic activities is that the most efficient movements always tend to look the most graceful. I'm a runner and I'm always interested to note people's running form. In most cases, the really good, efficient runners have a fluid motion with no extraneous movements, which as a result looks much better as well. Good skiing is the same - extraneous, jerky movements impede the skier and hurt the eye of the observer.

You want a good reason to spend a significant portion of your time doing drills? Master the Essentials so you can venture off piste with confidence.

edit - updated link to video (this one might be different but the same idea)

Agreed. Collectively though, I think the Japanese are putting out some of the strongest non-WC technical skiing these days.

Sato is not in this DVD. I'll have to check to see who the skier in white is. All of them rip.

Max,

You really do find the best the internet has to offer (or are creating the best the internet has to offer  ).

What skis are they using-I didn't recognize the funk symbol on the bottom?

This video goes back to the discussion on the value of watching top free skiers-Because the terrain featured here is certainly Epic (nice sustained pitches, great snow, but nothing 'extreme') it demonstrates a sort of real world off-piste adventure everyone on this forum can aspire to and what the essentialsultimately lead up to. It Certainly looked great.

thanks for posting this.

At about 3:00 he does that drill move for the Super Phantom you were talking about -- lifting the stance ski. About 10 seconds later, he does it again, but he loses the inside ski and then crashes. (Actually I doubt if either one was intentional, he was just hitting some bumps)
