When you ski that far in the back seat you have to pop up like these guys, (jumping jacks come to mind) efficient skiing this is not. Skiing with gross movements is what it is and that's just the truth. And by "Gross" I don't mean large movements!!! I mean, "1. unattractively large or bloated"

How is that "move your hips forward mantra working for you???? You can see how well it's working for these guys. "Hips over the boots", is a planet they have never been on. The planet might as well be the Ork because they will never see it with their methods. You have to be old to know the ORK reference.

Befoe this degenerates into total inanity, one of my favorite Harald (paraphrased) quotes is "1 mm of flexing is right, 1 mm of extending is wrong".

Quality of movements:
PMTS: the bigger the movements- tipping, flexing, counterbalancing, etc- the better the skiing.
TTS: the smaller the movements- extending, steering, leaning, etc- the better the skiiing.

I have to qualify the bigger movements thing for PMTS.

You don't have to have or make big movements for good PMTS skiing.

These movements are so hidden, it's difficult to explain what I'm doing. But notice the legs are never twisting the skis and they are perfectly parallel turns with no wedge, edge set or push. Not one PSIA demo team member can make this turn. But it looks so easy. I hold these types of turns dearly close to my favorite, as they are the most technical of any turn I make, even compared to high end carving.

So Miles, the answer is, in PMTS the movements only need to be as big or increased, to match the slope, the speed wanted, and turn radius designed for the slope. On every run I plan a turn radius I want to keep, and I hold to it until I stop. I rarely, randomly ski down without a focus. If you don't have a plan you never know what and how much you can push without screwing up. I can push hard on many difficult black diamonds runs because I know ahead of time, what I can handle.

I have enjoyed reading this post and I have learned a lot about skiing, MA and even some tv trivia. I do know the skier in the original video, I believe he is a L4 teaching in Blackcomb and I believe the road he is skiing on is on that mountain.
Geoff, your MA was insightful as always and your tv knowledge was spot on. One phrase did sit with me and that was about the typical Canadians in "the shiting in the woods pose" or as you so kindly put it the "back seat". I hope I don't come across as overly defensive, but I wish to remind the readers that both Harald and Diana learned to ski in Montreal area and that is in Canada. Another favourite skier of mine is Thomas Grandi and while looking on YouTube for some of his skiing I came across this gem of a video. Thomas is incorrectly called "Bob Grandi" on the YouTube title and the split screen doesn't make for good MA but who is that American on the top screen and how did he make the US demo team? If they had guys skiing like this when Harald was on the team how did the coaches not notice the difference in their Skiing? Does the US team supply toilets for the back of the skis because if they did this guy could wear a crown.

To watch the video of Thomas unencumbered go to this site. This was shot on the ice at the top of Lake Louise, very steep, icey, yet Thomas' pure pmts form makes it look easy. One of the readers of this forum taught Thomas and his sister in a north eastern US ski academy. Did I mention that Thomas is Canadian?

Seriously Geoff I look forward to skiing with you, Steve and James in a few weeks at Abasin.
